What is a Nutrition Coach?
A nutrition coach helps people to achieve their health goals by giving the client practical changes to their eating habits and optimising their lifestyle behaviours.
A certified nutrition coach is trained in general nutrition and behaviour science and coaching techniques and helps create personalised guidance with meal planning based on the client’s individual circumstances such as body composition, health and weight goals, nutritional needs based on age and stage, as well as the client’s food preferences.
Their main role is to provide nutrition education and advice, either in a one-on-one setting or in groups with the aim to improve people’s health.
What is the difference between a Nutritionist and a Nutrition Coach?
There are some similarities, and both have a good nutrition training, however a certified nutrition coach focuses more on a nutrition plan with a focus on the lifestyle changes while a nutritionist is able to prescribe a nutrition plan based on specific medical dietary needs.
A nutrition coach is not able to diagnose health conditions, prescribe interventions, or treat medical conditions. Instead, they play a critical and supportive role in an individual’s health journey, though providing:
techniques that enable clients to identify their health and nutrition goals
practical lifestyle strategies
general health and nutritional education
coaching and support to overcome obstacles
Most people are aware of what the benefits of eating more whole foods, fruits and vegetables can do, but struggle to either implement the necessary changes or sustain them over longer periods. Also, with the plethora of contradictory nutrition advice and ‘fad’ diets on the market, it can be confusing to know where to start and who to believe.
A nutrition coach can educate you on what good nutrition is and how to implement it in your life. They can be a valuable asset to hold you accountable and are a knowledgeable partner to support you on your health journey.
